SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCES
Unit Leadership
I am currently the Director (Interim) at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) Learning Technology Center (LTC) within Academic Affairs where almost 3000 instructors (faculty, academic staff, and TA's) are supported in their use of digital technologies to facilitate teaching and learning. Specifically, my team plans and implements pedagogical and technological services and programs that enhance students’ learning, support faculty instructional needs, align with university goals and initiatives, and reflect national trends.
In leading the UWMLTC for the last four years, I oversee the recognized UWM Faculty Development Program for Online and Blended Teaching and Learning, which has been conducted at dozens of universities and conferences all over the world, the UWM Certificate in Blended and Online Teaching, the online and blended teachers users group (OBTUG), the Sloan-C blended faculty development program, the Desire2Learn site administration team, and several emerging technology initiatives, including students response systems, eTexts, ePortfolios, virtual worlds, social media, mobile learning, gamification, digital content production, collaboration tools, competency-based education, MOOCs, open textbook authoring, open education resources, learner analytics, and more.
The UWM team has collaborated with academic units to develop of over 40 online and blended degree programs to its approximate 30,000 students.
National and International Leadership
I have over 7 years of experience in providing national and international leadership in teaching and learning as a member of the NMC Horizon Project Higher Ed Advisory Board, EDUCAUSE IT Status committee, State of Wisconsin Department of Instruction’s Superintendent's digital learning advisory council, and Sage Publications digital media advisory board. Also, I am the 2013 chair of the Sloan-C Blended conference, co-chair the UWM Online Program Council (OPC), campus liaison for online and blended programming, and chair the UWM Digital Futures.
Emerging Technologies
I have advanced and led the innovative use of emerging technologies to facilitate teaching and learning, including application, implementation, and evaluation. My work and that of my team has been presented nationally and internationally, including at conferences such as EDUCAUSE, Sloan-C, New Media Consortium, Distance Teaching and Learning, and others. Also, I am the keynote at eLearning 2013 in San Antonio, TX, in February. My pedagogical models, best practices, and research have resulted in numerous publications, including my recent book, Social Media for Educators. My work and expertise on social media, virtual worlds, clickers, and other emerging technologies has been highlighted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Ed Tech Magazine, eCampus News, and other local and national news and media outlets.
Blended and Online
I oversee the recognized UWM Faculty Development Program for Online and Blended Teaching and Learning, which has been conducted at dozens of universities and conferences all over the world. The UWM team has collaborated with academic units to develop of over 40 online and blended degree programs to its approximate 30,000 students. Also, I lead the UWM Certificate in Blended and Online Teaching, the online and blended teachers users group (OBTUG), and the Sloan-C blended faculty development program. Also, I am the 2013 chair of the Sloan-C Blended conference, co-chair the UWM Online Program Council (OPC), and co-lead online and blended programming fro the campus.
I taught my first online course in 2001 at Arizona State University and my first blended course in 2006. I have been invited to campuses across the country to share my course design.
I am a co-author of a chapter found in "Research perspectives in blended learning" published by Taylor Francis and one in "Blended learning: Research perspectives" published by the Sloan-C.
Research
I research mediated learning, including blended and online, as well as other communication technologies and their impact on teaching and learning, including clickers, social media, virtual worlds and more. Recent publications include a book, Social Media for Educators, a chapter, Impact of Blended Faculty Development, in the book Research Perspectives in Blended Learning, and an article, Guiding Institutions' Use of Social Media in the journal of Planning for Higher Education. Currently, I am analyzing the data and working on an article on the impact of eTexts on teaching and learning as part of the EDUCAUSE, Internet 2 pilot.
Presentations
I have keynoted several conferences, including eLearning 2013, San Antonio, and eLearning Asia, Singapore. Also, I have been an invited/featured speaker at several conferences, including Sloan-C International Conference for Online Learning, Sloan-C Conference for Blended Learning, EDUCAUSE Annual conference, and the New Media Consortium Annual conference. Examples of feedback received is "excellent, enthusiastic presenter… wish went more than the 45 minutes,” “this was my favorite,” "Excellent and engaging speaker, and a great topic that was a good mix of very concrete steps and larger issues," and "Really enjoyed this presentation. I wanted to sit at her table during the roundtable discussions, but there was no room. It was already filled and people stayed there until the bitter end! Excellent presenter" (from EDUCAUSE Midwest Regional conference).
Teaching
I have 13 years of teaching experience, tech-enhanced, blended, and online, in the communication discipline, and I have been invited to campuses across the country to share my course design. My course design is active learning, student-centered, and my student evaluations are very positive. My favorite evaluation reads “Joosten Rocks.”
Faculty development
I have developed, participated, and led faculty development programs for online and blended teaching as well as various emerging technologies (clickers, virtual worlds, social media, and more) for over 7 years. In addition to the our faculty development programs being presented at UWM, they have conducted for the Sloan-C, the 1st eLearning Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, eLearning Asia in Singapore, and campuses and conferences throughout the country.
Project management
I have 11 years of project management of experience and four years as the unit lead (associate director and director), including the UWM faculty development program, UWM certificate program in online and blended teaching, Sloan-C blended faculty development program, and several emerging technology project initiatives (clickers, virtual worlds, social media, etexts, and more). My educational background in management, public administration, and organizational communication informs my decision-making and planning.
Evaluation
I have over 13 years of evaluation experience. I bring quantitative and qualitative methodological expertise at various levels, course, program and institutional. I have developed dozens of survey instruments and interview schedules as well as performed analyses and shared findings in several different forms with various audiences.

Provide strategic planning and oversight of the day to day functions of the UWM Learning Technology Center (LTC) staff in their mission to provide reliable administration of learning technologies, including tools such as the learning management system, student response systems, ePortfolios, digital media, eTexts, social media, and virtual worlds, and provide timely consultation to faculty and instructors seeking to use these technologies in pedagogically effective ways to improve student outcomes.
Ensure quality of blended and online programs at UWM through leading the ongoing development and offering of the LTC faculty development program for online and blended teaching, the UWM Certificate in Online and Blended Learning, the Joanne Lazirko Innovative Use of Technology award, evaluation planning for online and blended, the online program council, and the online and blended teaching users group.
Excel UWM's national and international reputation for an emphasis on needs-based implementation of emerging technologies through research efforts, intended to provide vision to the campus on the direction of learning technologies and facilitate innovative teaching and learning methods with the UWM teaching community, and disseminate this research at national and international conferences and in publications.
Provide guidance to the staff, teachers, and researchers with advanced degrees in their respective disciplines and with many years of experience teaching and supporting technology-enhanced, blended, and online courses, in their efforts to support to instructors in their use of an array of learning technologies, in their managing of their technology projects, and in their research efforts to evaluate emerging technologies.
